Sustainable real estate development in Sri Lanka: What’s being done

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation with a rich cultural heritage and plentiful natural resources. As the population grows and the demand for housing increases, there is an urgent need for sustainable real estate development in Sri Lanka. In this article, we’ll look at what the country is doing to promote sustainable development.

  1. Green Building Certification: Sri Lanka has established a Green Building Certification program to encourage developers to incorporate environmentally friendly features into their projects. The program establishes a framework for assessing and certifying buildings based on their energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and other environmental considerations.
  2. Renewable Energy Initiatives: Sri Lanka has a plethora of renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind, and hydro power. The government has launched a number of initiatives to encourage the use of renewable energy in real estate development, such as tax breaks for developers who incorporate solar panels into their projects.
  3. Rainwater Harvesting: Water scarcity is becoming a major issue in Sri Lanka, particularly in urban areas. To address this issue, some property developers are incorporating rainwater harvesting systems into their projects, which collect and store rainwater for later use.
  4. Preservation of Natural Resources: Sri Lanka is home to a number of distinct ecosystems and endangered species, including the Sri Lankan elephant and the blue whale. Some developers are working to protect these natural resources by incorporating conservation areas and wildlife corridors into their projects.
  5. Community Engagement: It is critical to engage with local communities and stakeholders to ensure the success of sustainable real estate development in Sri Lanka. Some developers involve local residents in project planning and design, as well as working with them to identify and address any environmental or social concerns.

While much work remains to be done, these initiatives are a positive step toward promoting sustainable real estate development in Sri Lanka. Developers can create healthier, more livable communities that benefit both people and the environment by incorporating environmentally responsible practices into their projects.
